Karkidaka Vavu Celebration in Calgary

Karkidaka Vavu, also known as Vavu Bali or Karkidaka Vavu Bali, is a significant ritual observed by Malayalee Hindus in Calgary. This year, it will be celebrated on August 3rd, coinciding with the new moon day (Amavasya) of the Malayalam month of Karkidakam. On this day, Malayalee Hindus dedicate themselves to offering oblations and paying homage to the departed souls of their ancestors.

Devotees gather to perform the Bali Tharpanam ritual, which involves making offerings of rice, sesame seeds, and water to the souls of their forefathers. This ritual is conducted on the banks of the Bow River in Calgary. Guided by the OHM’s priest, the devotees follow the ritual believed to ensure peace and salvation for the departed souls.

Karkidaka Vavu is not only a day of remembrance and reverence but also underscores the cultural emphasis on family and ancestral respect among Malayalee Hindus. This ritual brings together communities and families, fostering a sense of unity and continuity with the past.
