Thiruvathira is believed to be the birth star of Lord Shiva. Thiruvathira festival in the month of Dhanu, is celebrated with Thirvathira and food including Thiruvathira puzhukku.

According to hindu purana Sati Devi, the consort of Lord Shiva, immolated herself after being disrespected by her father. Later, she was reborn as Parvati and performed intense penance to reunite with Lord Shiva. This event is said to have occurred on the day of Thiruvathira.

On the day of Thiruvathira the married women observe the Thiruvathira Vratham for the longevity, health, and happiness of their husbands. Unmarried women also observe this vratham to pray for a good life partner.
